Uttara (উত্তরা), also known as Uttara Model Town, is one of the largest suburbs of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, located to the north of the city. The name of the suburb is derived from the Bengali word "North". It was founded in 1966 and has a total area of 36.91 km2 (14.25 sq mi). Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is situated very close to Uttara. Dhaka Airport Railway Station also serves the area. Rajlokkhi Complex, a large shopping mall and a popular destination, is based in the area. There are a few parks and lakes in the suburb. It is also home to BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT), a private university.
