The Caribbean Sea is a large oceanic sea located in the basin of the North Atlantic Ocean, which can be found right on the border between the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. It is known as the American Mediterranean Sea since it borders with the coastal areas of many countries like Southern Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, as well as the countries of the South American continent like Venezuela, Columbia, and some others. The Caribbean Sea is one of the largest seas in the world, with over 1 million square miles of the area. It is primarily famous as a home to one of the world's largest barrier reefs, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is an amazing eco-system and a very popular tourist attraction for divers and others.

The Caribbean Sea is known as the place where a large number of big and small islands and island arcs are located. Many of those are independent island countries like Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and some others. In its western part, the sea is bordered by the countries of the southernmost part of the North American continent which are also quite small. The biosphere of the sea is rich and wonderful, so very often plenty of scientific research and explorations are carried out there. Due to unstable climatic conditions, the area of the Caribbean Sea is very vulnerable and can be characterized by frequent hurricanes and other natural disasters which affect the life and threaten damage to the settlements located in the coastal areas of the sea.
