Shakespeare & Company is a worldwide famous independent bookshop located at 37 Rue de la Bucherie, Paris V, France. Situated in the heart of Paris, on the left bank on the Seine River, it was opened by George Whitman in 1951 and took its name from Sylvia Beach's store which was opened on 19 November 1919 and closed during the German occupation of Paris. The bookshop was used as a filming location in films including Before Sunset (2004), Julie & Julia (2009), and Midnight in Paris (2011). "Shakespeare and Company, Paris: A History of the Rag & Bone Shop of the Heart" about the shop's history was published by Shakespeare and Company in June 2016. There is a small café "Shakespeare and Company Café" right next to the bookshop.
