Founded in 1968, the park serves as an open-air museum including adobe buildings from the 19th century, as well as a few restaurants and gift shops. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 1971, and designated as an Old Town San Diego Historic District on November 6, 1970.
