The town was incorporated in 1862 and has a total area of 2.72 sq mi (7.05 km2). There are a few historic structures in the town such as Oakland Station, the Garrett County Courthouse, and St. Peter the Apostle Church. Oakland Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984.
