The county seat of Jackson County, the city of Newport is located on the shores of White River in northeastern Arkansas, United States. Situated 84 miles northeast of Little Rock, 44 miles southwest of Jonesboro, and 90 miles northwest of Memphis, the city has a total area of 13.80 sq mi (35.75 km2). Ten sites in the city were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historical places and points of interest in the city include the Former Jackson County Courthouse, Newport Country Club, IMAD Splash & Newport City Pool, Hines Park, Jacksonport State Park, Empie-Van Dyke House, Newport American Legion Community Hut, Missouri Pacific Depot, as well as several hotels and stores. The city is also home to Arkansas State University-Newport. Mary Nell Steenburgen, an American actress, was born in Newport, Arkansas, on February 8, 1953. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1980 movie "Melvin and Howard".
