Muir Woods National Monument is a 554-acre nature preserve in Mill Valey, southwestern Marin County, California, United States, situated on Mount Tamalpais. It protects old giant coastal redwood trees and features hiking trails, campgrounds, restrooms, a gift shop, a cafe, and a visitor center. Other tree species that grow in the park include the bigleaf maple, the tanoak, and the California bay laurel. It is also home to a variety of animals, such as bats, pileated woodpeckers, northern spotted owls, mule deer, Sonoma chipmunks, and so on. The park was created on January 9, 1908, and named after John Muir, a Scottish-born American naturalist, and known as the father of the national parks. Muir Woods National Monument was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 2008. Muir Woods National Monument is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and biking.
