Leadville is one of Colorado's 12 statutory cities, located within the Rocky Mountains, in the central part of the state, United States. It is the seat of Lake County, as well as its only incorporated municipality. It is also the highest incorporated city in the country at an elevation of 10,152 feet (3,094 meters). Leadville grew as a mining town. It was founded by Horace Tabor and August Meyer in 1877 and incorporated on February 18, 1878. The Leadville Historic District has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District since 1961.
