Lawrence is a small city in Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, United States, situated on the Merrimack River. It is bordered by Methuen to the north, North Andover to the east, and Andover to the southwest. It was settled in 1655, incorporated as a city in 1853, and named for Abbott Lawrence, an American businessman and politician. The city is home to a shoe manufacturing plant of New Balance, one of the prominent sports footwear, apparel, and accessories manufacturers in the world. Historical landmarks and tourist attractions in the city are High Service Water Tower and Reservoir, Lawrence Heritage State Park, Great Stone Dam, Riverfront State Park, Lawrence History Center, Canal Street Antique Mall, the Lawrence Public Library, the Old Public Library, Campagnone Common, and Veterans Memorial Stadium. The city is also home to Northern Essex Community College and Cambridge College. Interstate 495 and Route 28 serve the area.
