Lawrence, nicknamed "LFK" or "Larryville", is a large city in northeast Kansas, United States, located on the Kansas River, 35 miles west of Kansas City, and 25 miles east of Topeka. It is one of the largest cities in the state. It was originally inhabited by the Kaw Nation. The city was founded in 1854, incorporated on February 20, 1858, and named for Amos A. Lawrence, an American businessman and social activist. Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University.
