The lake is home to a variety of birds, plants, and native trees. It was named after Oakland's mayor Samuel Merritt and has a surface area of 140 acres (0.57 km2). Nearby attractions include the Camron-Stanford House which was constructed by Samuel Merritt in 1876, and the Bellevue-Staten Building built in 1929, designed by Herman Baumann. Other points of interest include the Necklace of lights that was lit in 1925. It is also an Oakland Designated Landmark.
