Settled at the beginning of the 19th century, incorporated on August 18, 1886, the city has a total area of 29.66 sq mi (76.83 km2). It was named after William Jasper, who was a sergeant in the Revolutionary War. Historic Sites in the city are Jasper Downtown Historic District, First United Methodist Church, The Walker County Hospital, and the John Hollis Bankhead House. The city annually hosts the "Foothills Festival" in Historic Downtown Jasper Square.
