It is situated 14 miles northeast of Washington, District of Columbia, and 27 miles southwest of Baltimore. It is also close to the state border with D.C. The city was settled on September 30, 1937, and incorporated on June 1, 1937. It is home to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
