Emporia is a city in Kansas, United States, located in the east-central part of the state, 87 miles northeast of Wichita, 108 miles southwest of Kansas City, and 60 miles southwest of Topeka. It is also the county seat of Lyon County. Emporia Municipal Airport, U.S. Route 50, Interstate 335, and Interstate 35 serve the area. It was founded in 1857 and incorporated in 1870. The first Veterans Day in the United States was observed in Emporia in 1953. The city is home to Flint Hills Technical College and Emporia State University. It is also home to the oldest library in operation in the state of Kansas.
