The city of Demopolis is located within the Black Belt at the junction of the Black Warrior River and Tombigbee River in west-central Alabama, United States. It is the largest city in Marengo County. The city is also at the heart of the Canebrake region in the state. Its name means "City of the People" in the Greek language. The city was settled in 1817, incorporated on December 11, 1821.
