Christmas Island Detention Center, or Christmas Island Immigration Reception and Processing Center, used to be one of the main governmental immigration facilities located on Christmas Island, which can be found in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean. It is located right in the middle of Christmas Island National Park which occupies most of the area of the island, except the area of a small airport, Christmas Island Airport, situated in the northeastern corner of the island. For about a year, Christmas Island Detention Center was closed until the tragic events of the outbreak of the 2019-2020 coronavirus pandemic when the facility started being used again as a destination for all the Australian residents who have been evacuated from the city of Wuhan and the province of Hubei where the SARS-CoV-2 related disease had started.

The immigration center used to play the key role of a detention facility for those who wanted to enter the Australian continent but had to be checked by the authorities, for one reason or another. There is also a large hospital known as Indian Ocean Territories Health Service or simply the Central Christmas Island Hospital which used to be engaged in estimating the health condition of the people who wanted to enter the continent. In the same way, during the events of the terrible situation of the 2019-2020 coronavirus pandemic, Christmas Island Detention Center played a role of a detention area and the place where some people were placed for the common 14-day quarantine. There were about 240 people including 84 children kept on the island for 14 days, in order to guarantee them being free from SARS-CoV-2.
