Aiken is a city and the seat of Aiken County, located 20 miles northeast of Augusta, in western South Carolina, United States. Nicknamed "The City of Trees", it was founded in the middle of the 19th century, incorporated on December 19, 1835, and was named after the founder of the South Carolina Railroad. It is home to the University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Technical College, as well as an advanced recreation city with a good number of facilities like golf courses, soccer and basketball courts, tennis, polo clubs, etc. The city is also part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. U.S. Route 1 and 78 serve the area. Main attractions in Aiken include the Aiken County Historical Museum, Savannah River Site Museum, Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum, Virginia Acres Park, Citizens Park, and Gem Lakes Recreation Area.
