Twister is an American action-adventure thriller film directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jeremy Davies, and Todd Field, the film was released on May 10, 1996, grossed $495.7 million worldwide against a $88–92 million budget. It became the second-highest-grossing film of the year and was nominated for two Academy Awards. Twisters, a standalone sequel to the movie will be released in July 2024. Twister was shot in Iowa, Oklahoma, and Canada. The opening scene was filmed in Fairfax. Filming also took place at Warner Brothers Burbank Studios. Kaw Lake was among the filming locations.
