Everyone keeps saying that "The Way Back" is about an alcoholic (true to life of Ben Affleck) but to me, it is about a man whose child died of cancer when he was only 9 years old. That is a life event that is almost impossible to find your way back from. Jack doesn't know how to overcome the overwhelming anger and sadness of losing his only child. He is self medicating himself with alcohol to overcome that loss that no one can reverse. He has to keep living with the loss.
