Some of this material is wrong. The hotel interiors were NOT FILMED at Ahwahnee hotel. Some of the interior designs of the Overlook Hotel set were based on those of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park. Large sets were built at EMI Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England that resembled Ahwahnee hotel. The set for the fictional Overlook Hotel was at the time the largest ever built at Elstree, including a life-size re-creation of the exterior of the Timberline hotel. In February 1979, the set at Elstree was badly damaged in a fire, causing a delay in the production.

Hollywood American Legion Post 43 was not a filming location. This should be removed.

I wonder the same thing about the “Kensington Apartments.” There’s never been any mention of Stanley sending out his crew to Colorado.

WHY were the interior scenes of the Overlook hotel filmed in Elstree Studios Borehamwood England?

Mainly because Kubrick preferred shooting all his films in England close to his home where all of his pre and post production on all his films since Dr. Strangelove took place there. Having everything recreated on Elstree’s soundstages rather than filming on location allowed for greater control over the project.
