McCarthy is a small village situated in the southern part of Alaska, USA, right in Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Natural Preserve. It is a part of Valdez-Cordova Area and is a small village near the Wrangell Mountains. The village appeared less that 100 years ago at the place of an old Athabaskan settlement. It was the area where deposits of copper were discovered, so it became the location of the Kennecott Copper Mines, and the village also became a small center of entertainment and social life. It used to be a larger village than it is now, with the current number of residents of only about 30-35 people. Despite quite cold climate, the area attracts some tourists who want to come and see glaciers or explore the amazing local nature.
