Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi in Turkish) is one of the most popular landmarks in Turkey and for many people is the main symbol of Beyoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in the 14th century as a watchtower and used as a prison in the 15th century, the tower is situated in Galata, the district of Beyoglu. It is 62.59 m (205.3 ft) tall (which is close to the height of a 9-story building) and has a base diameter close to 54 feet. At the moment of its construction, it was the tallest building in the city. There is an observation deck on the top of the tower which offers a 360-degree view of the city, including the Bosphorus, Besiktas district, Galata Bridge, the Blue Mosque, St. Sophia, and other known landmarks of the city. Galata Tower was restored many times, and today it serves as a museum and offers a top-floor restaurant.
