Ani Ruins is one of the famous landmarks of Armenian nation, situated in the province of Kars, which is in north eastern Turkey, just a few miles away from the border between Turkey and Armenia. The ancient site includes the ruins of a very old Armenian town built during the 9thor 10th century AD. The town used to be the capital of an Armenian Kingdom and was a thriving one. However, in the 13th century it was captured by the Mongolian Khanate and in the 14th century the town was severely damaged by a very powerful earthquake. Thus Ani was abandoned and remained only as ruins. however, it plays a very important role for Armenian culture and is considered to be one of the national symbols for development and economic advancement. The site is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
