Alexandroupoli (Αλεξανδρούπολη), formerly known as Dedeağaç, is a coastal city and a famous port in northeastern Greece, situated about 40 kilometers away from the border with Turkey. Being the capital of the Thrace region, this city is a key industrial hub and a very important commercial center. It is also a historic place with a very good number of landmarks and places of interest. It was settled in the 19th century, by the Ottoman Empire and briefly captured by the Russians. It was renamed in 1920 as Alexander, the King of Greece, and became a part of Greece in 1923. Points of interest in the city included the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, the Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupolis, the Municipal Indoor Swimming Pool of Alexandroupoli, the Park of Altinalmazi, Altinamazi Open Theater, the Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli, and the ruins of the Byzantine Avandas Castle.
